Insatiable By: Meg Cabot Book Review

But her boss is making her write about them anyway, even though Meena doesn’t believe in them.

Not that Meena isn’t familiar with the supernatural. See, Meena Harper knows how you’re going to die (not that you’re going to believe her; no one ever does).

But not even Meena’s precognition can prepare her for what happens when she meets—then makes the mistake of falling in love with—Lucien Antonescu, a modern-day prince with a bit of a dark side . . . a dark side a lot of people, like an ancient society of vampire-hunters, would prefer to see him dead for.

The problem is, he already is dead. Maybe that’s why he’s the first guy Meena’s ever met that she could see herself having a future with. See, while Meena’s always been able to see everyone else’s future, she’s never been able look into her own.

And while Lucien seems like everything Meena has ever dreamed of in a boyfriend, he might turn out to be more like a nightmare.

Now might be a good time for Meena to start learning to predict her own future . . .

(Summary thanks to Goodreads)

What a book I don't even know where to start. First I have to say a lot of writers have been trying to attempt to write Paranormal Romance (as the genre is very popular) some authors have succeeded in versatile writing and others have failed. Meg Cabot succeeded, and you can tell she did her research on the subject.  Most historical references where are real which was an added bonus to making this storyline seem believable.

Lets start with the characters well let me start off by saying that one of my favorite parts of this book was that Vampires where in it. Another thing I really enjoyed is that I find my self enjoying telepaths more and more as I am slowly seeing them being integrated more often in novels. I really liked Meena she was using her power for the greater good right from the beginning instead of ignoring her gift. I found Mary Lou annoying just as much as Meena. Lucien oh Lucien how I pronounce you my fiction crush of Insatiable, because you know I need one for each novel to make it a little more interesting. Jon GET A LIFE!!! Sorry he kept getting on my nerves. Closer to the end not so much, but it was at the peak when the whole Alaric thing was going on (I'm trying my hardest not to spoil the book, if I haven't already). Alaric at first I thought maybe a prospective love conflict, but there were parts where I was thinking to myself "Meena if you like him I'll reach into the book and slap you." I found Alaric most of the time hard headed, annoying, and their was no way of reasoning with him. The only time I found my self feeling bad for Alaric was when he sort of confessed his feelings. Overall the characters where unique, believable, well thought, and well delivered.
Meg Cabot has greatly succeeded in delivering a well written Vampire novel that will have Vampire fan pleased. I adore the Romeo and Juliet love story well thought out and well written even if I did not like the way it ended (but I do see why the decision was made).

One thing I need to mention before concluding this review is that the transition between the chapters and characters Point of Views were smooth and I knew whos POV it was within seconds of reading. I have to give praise yet again because I ADORE THIS COVER!! Even if it does have some simplicity to it, once completing the book I appreciated the cover way, way more. I am proud to say there is a sequel in the making (This information was found thanks to Angelique @ Vampires and Tofu check her out she's awesome). Angelique was nice enough to provide me with a link to one of Meg Cabot fun facts page on Insatiable, be sure to check it out I really found it cool. (For this page click on Meg Cabots name above).

My Blurb for this Novel: "Funny, Sarcastic, and yet Historical new take to Vampires. Just like a Vampire once you get a taste you wont be able to put it down until the last drop."

I would Personally Rate this Novel

Give Mississippi for Christmas! (copy)

Have you thought of giving Mississippi books as holiday gifts? I was thumbing through the University of Mississippi Press (UPM) catalog and thought the holiday selections would make perfect gifts for my friends.

The first selection is Occasions: Selected Writings of Eudora Welty compiled by Pearl Amelia McHaney. Associate professor McHaney thought it would be nice to collect rare works by the author for her centennial birthday. Articles such as her earliest story, “Acrobats in the Park,” and humor pieces such as “Women!! Make Turban in Own Home!” fill pages with pieces only found within archives. This book promises any Welty fan a new perspective on her genius.

Second selection is Highway 51: Mississippi Hill Country by Gloria Norris. I talked about this excellent coffee-table book a couple of weeks ago, but as a reminder it does depict locals having fun or working along our most beloved thoroughfare.

Captivating Combinations: Color and Style in the Garden by Norman Winter is third in the suggestions. As always, Mr. Winter provides stunning color photographs and audacious mixtures that make any gardener salivate. Only he could mix chili peppers with a bed of red petunias. In a section titled, “Butterfly and Hummingbird,” Winter captures a scene from Pine Mountain, Ga. where orange cosmos and lantana blend beautifully to attract butterflies. If anyone is interested – hubby pay attention – I would love this for Christmas!

One of the last selections is a remake of the 1972 Mississippi Cookbook. Here is your chance to give a batter and splatter free copy to your favorite cook. The history of the book states, “Over 7,000 recipes were collected from all areas of the state. From this total, the home economists of the state Cooperative Extension Service had the painfully difficult task of screening the amount down to the 1,200 best recipes.” Martha Hall Foose updates the forward in this must have tome.

My pick, which is also published by UPM but not included in the holiday list, is Lost Plantations of the South by Marc R. Matrana. Eight chapters are dedicated to the glorious past of architecture in this one of a kind book. Mississippi’s lost treasures are found in chapter six such as familiar Longwood outside of Natchez and Windsor south of Port Gibson. Readers will also encounter Goat Castle, Brierfield, Hurricane, Prairie Mont, Malmaison, and Homewood plantations. Imagine my excitement opening this present – um, hubby – Christmas morning.

Synopsis:
Goodreads
Wyldcliffe Abbey School for Young Ladies, housed in a Gothic mansion on the bleak northern moors, is elite, expensive, and unwelcoming. When Evie Johnson is torn away from her home by the sea to become the newest scholarship student, she is more isolated than she could have dreamed. Strict teachers, snobbish students, and the oppressive atmosphere of Wyldcliffe leave Evie drowning in loneliness. Evie's only lifeline is Sebastian, a rebellious, mocking, dangerously attractive young man she meets by chance. As Evie's feelings for Sebastian grow with each secret meeting, she starts to fear that he is hiding something about his past. And she is haunted by glimpses of a strange, ghostly girl—a girl who is so eerily like Evie, she could be a sister. Evie is slowly drawn into a tangled web of past and present that she cannot control. And as the extraordinary, elemental forces of Wyldcliffe rise up like the mighty sea, Evie is faced with an astounding truth about Sebastian, and her own incredible fate. Gillian Shields's electrifying tale will dazzle readers with suspense, mysticism, and romance.

Review:
I am not sure what I feel about this book. There is a kind of mixed reaction . I bought it because -
1. I had heard about it
2. I liked the cover
3. Main Reason - Melissa Marr's review on the cover describing the book as an "enticing paranormal romance." Not only do I love Melissa Marr but also the gothic genre.
So of course I had to read the book despite the warning on the cover itself- the tagline - "First Love Never Dies..." Now I am not a big fan of books which have romance as the main plot. I can stand it as a part of the story especially if its well done . But no cheesy romances for me , please! Yes, I am a cynic!
Yet I did like this book..somewhat. There were both good and bad things about Immortal.
Sixteen year old Evie Johnson is forced to attend an elite all girls' school called Wyldcliffe Abbey School because her mother's dead , her father's in army and her grandmother is hospitalized. The school not only has a bad reputation with its secrets and tragic past but the students are rich snobbish brats too.One of them, Celeste takes it upon herself to torment Evie , who as a consequence is sad and lonely. She starts having strange dreams and keeps on seeing things. She finds solace in a mysterious young boy called Sebastian. Sebastian has dark secrets of his own which he wants to protect Evie from. Evie sets out on a journey to discover the secrets that lie in the school's past and hence, discovers her true destiny.

I will start with the good things.
- The writing was great. The descriptions were beautiful. The concept was unique - it didn't follow the same stale storyline of very other YA fantasy.
- The emotions described in the book can be felt by the readers too - love, loss, grief, pain , fear, anger...... the author describes them beautifully.
- The storyline is divided into past and present. I really liked the part with past. It was very well-written and believable.

So what went wrong? Immortal could have been an intriguing book. The basic premise of the book was different and interesting but failed in its actual execution. First of all there was too much emphasis on the love story and sometimes it seemed that the author forgot about the actual plot in order to focus more on the romance. As for the romance..it was bordering on cheesiness! Some of the dialogues were so clichéd and cheesy that I couldn't help but laugh.
The story was very very predictable..so much so that I had guessed the ending in the first few chapters. The author failed to create a suspense element .
At first the story moved very slowly because of all the romance but the part which was actually the main plot of the book was very rushed.
Lastly, Sebastian was a very clichéd character. I am tired of the same characteristics that every guy in YA fantasy seems to have -
Dark hair - Check!
Brooding- Check!
Dark past - Check!
Mysterious and Sexy - Check!
Still, Immortal can be read atleast once just for the great writing. However I had expected much more.

Overall:
Unique Concept but doesn't live up to expectations
Recommended?
For one time reading maybe, otherwise you can steer clear of it.

About the author:

She then taught in a drama school, the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts, for several years, becoming Vice Principal. She recently taught English and Drama at Beechwood Sacred Heart, a girls’ boarding school.

Review: Halo by Alexandra Adornetto (ARC)

Title: Halo
Series: Halo Series
Book #: One
Author: Alexandra Adornetto
Published: 2010
Source: Traveling ARC Tour
Rating:

Nothing much happens in the sleepy town of Venus Cove. But everything changes when three angels are sent from heaven to protect the town against the gathering forces of darkness: Gabriel, the warrior; Ivy, the healer; and Bethany, a teenage girl who is the least experienced of the trio. They work hard to conceal their true identity and, most of all, their wings. But the mission is threatened when the youngest angel, Bethany, is sent to high school and falls in love with the handsome school captain, Xavier Woods.

Will she defy the laws of Heaven by loving him? Things come to a head when the angels realize they are not the only supernatural power in Venus Cove. There′s a new kid in town and he′s charming, seductive and deadly. Worst of all, he′s after Beth. (taken from goodreads.com)

Okay, I'll admit it; I first fell in love with Halo's cover. Isn't it beautiful? I know I'm not the only person out there who saw the cover and immediately added it to their to-read list. Still, I'm glad this cover caught my eye because behind it there's a story worth reading.

Angels are portrayed in a very different light from those in other angel novels I've read. The angels aren't fallen, but rather sent on a mission to save mankind from the forces of evil. While Beth is tempted by Xavier, she is still a heavenly being. I really appreciated that Adornetto wrote Beth's character as an angel that was both celestial and human. It made her more relatable as I read about the struggle between her heart and her responsibilities.

I loved the relationship between Xavier and Beth. It was so sweet and honest. Their love was also forbidden, which made it all the more romantic. I thought that I might find Xavier boring because Beth was so intriguing, but I didn't. Both characters are realistic and strong. I fell head over heals for Xavier just as much as Beth did.

In my opinion, this book has a slightly Christian feel to it. Being a Christian, I enjoyed the familiar concepts and morals. Therefore I would recommend the novel to Christians, but I'd also recommend it to non-Christians. I don't think the religious aspect of the novel would ruin it for anyone.

Overall, Halo was an excellent read. Romantic and original, it captured my heart. I’m definitely recommending it to everyone! I cannot wait for the sequels that are sure to come.

MORTAL ENEMIES

DOOMED LOVE

Marked as special at an early age, Jacinda knows her every move is watched. But she longs for freedom to make her own choices. When she breaks the most sacred tenet of her kind, she nearly pays with her life, only to be spared by a beautiful stranger sent to hunt those like her. Forced to flee into the mortal world, Jacinda struggles to adapt. The one bright light is Will. Gorgeous, elusive Will who stirs her inner draki to life. Although she is irrestibly drawn to him, Jacinda knows Will's dark secret: He and his family are hunters. She should avoid him at all costs. But her inner draki is slowly slipping away - if it dies she will be left a human forever. She'll do anything to prevent that. Even if it means getting closer to her most dangerous enemy.

Mythical powers and irresistible passion ignite in this story of a girl who defies all expectations and whose love crosses an ancient divide ...

Review in 5: Fast, Steamy, Romeo/Juliet, and Poetic.

Review: This book is like a breathe of fresh air in the shape-changer type YA novel universe. I like the unique concept of people who can shift into dragons, or well dragons who can shift into humans. I also liked the decidedly sizzling scenes in this book, they were a lot steamier than most YA romance books I have read, yes, pun intended.

I like the development of the characters throughout the book but I believe that Jacinda, her mother, and her sister all need to figure something out, because all them are asking each other to give up something fundamental to their happiness in one situation or another. So somehow at least one of the family at one time will be depressed. So intro Will...he is doing something that he doesn't believe in for his father's happiness and I have NO CLUE how Jacinda can be with him after going to his house...no freaking way...but if he is the only connection keeping her afloat, well then there is another story all together. *sigh* this story is just so freaking jacked up and depressing all around, yet you CAN NOT stop reading, hence Romeo and Juliet.

The writing throughout the story is very good; it keeps you focused on the story, unable to break away. The writing also has some poetic aspects here and there, which I love to find in a book. The plot is also very good, it has some wonderful surprises and keeps you interested until the very last page. That being said...this book is cliffhanger central, I HATE HATE HATE cliffhangers like this one, especially when we have to wait soooo long for the next installment. Even with the cliffhanger though, definitely worth the read.

Ghost Orchid

A mysterious orchid is central to a story of love, lies, and redemption.

Once more before I die...the haunting mantra of a lonely woman. A woman grieving more than one loss.  On her regular walks amongst the splendor of the Audubon Society sanctuary, the sights and sounds of nature filled the void in Mel's soul.  She found peace here. No tears for what might have been. Only joy for having experienced the ecstasy of a great love. Her secrets stayed buried.

In another part of the world an exquisitely beautiful young woman also found peace by immersing herself in nature, capturing its beauty on film for National Geographic.  Educated in Europe's finest boarding schools, Neev became a model at fourteen, but after four years of posing and false smiles she knew she wanted more out of life.  Neev's love of photography brought her to the other side of the camera lens, and to exotic locations around the globe. Working on assignment with famous photographer Roger Andrew, she often trekked deep into the jungle in search of rare flowers.  Having a young, beautiful woman as a partner seemed like a good omen, and Roger thought their travels together could lead to a unique discovery. In spite of the age difference, their shared passion soon blossomed into a loving relationship.

When a Ghost Orchid began to bloom at the Audubon Society sanctuary, Roger knew this was the opportunity he'd been waiting for.

After a series of odd coincidences, they soon discovered this sensuous flower wasn't just rare and beautiful, it also had a strange, mystical power...

My Take:
I feel like Ghost Orchid had so much potential, but just didn't quite reach it.  The characters were so interesting and mysterious, I felt by the end of the book, that I didn't know them as well as I would have liked.  The back story wasn't 100% explained, and that drove me a little crazy.  Overall though, the writing was solid.  The characters were intriguing, and the events taking place really grabbed your attention.  Sometimes I felt like some of the best parts of the story (I won't tell you which parts because I don't want to give away an spoilers:)  was glossed over far too quickly, particularly in the last half of the book.  I loved the book, but I wanted it to be longer than it's 166 pages.  When I found out there may be a sequel, I was overjoyed, because I really wanted to learn more; the book seemed like a promising start, but it didn't feel conclusive.  You know what I mean?  Where the ending just doesn't feel like an end.  I loved the overall haunting feel of the book, and I did think about it quite a bit after I was finished reading it, partly because I felt like there were some things missing, and partly because I loved the story.  Ghost Orchid will definitely appeal to romantics, and those that love to read about lost loves and redemption.  Overall, I will have to rate this book a 3, Find a Used Book Store.  It comes close to being great, but misses the mark by just a little bit.

Do you agree with my review?  Do you think I'm totally off base?  Either way I'd love to hear from you, be sure to leave a comment and tell me how you feel!

If this book were a movie, it would likely be rated PG-13 for sexuality.

A few words with the author, D.K. Christi:

The Book Buff: When and why did you begin writing?

D.K. Christi: Very  young, out of loneliness.  I was quiet and studious with few friends.  Writing became my friend; always there.

TBB: What was the hardest part of writing your book?

DKC: Stopping.  I could not end the story of this living, breathing family whose lives needed to continue.  I knew them; they were part of my existence.

TBB: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

DKC: The beauty and wonder of nature is a precious gift to the soul and must be protected.  When the questions of life are a problem, the serenity of a beautiful, natural environment opens the heart and clears the mind to receive the answers.

TBB: If you could mirror the career of any other author, who would it be?

DKC: No, I choose my own path, not the path of another.  I seek the day when I might live in the mountains or by the sea and simply record their beauty.

TBB: What is your favorite interview question?

DKC: What inspires your writing?

TBB: What is the answer?

DKC: I am inspired by the many international places I have lived and worked and the vast array of cultural differences that influence the world today.  I am inspired by the power of love and the destruction of hate and the balancing of emotions in a complex world.

TBB: Do you have something you are working on at the moment that you’d like to share with the readers of The Book Buff?

DKC: I am writing two novels... I also think Ghost Orchid has a sequel.

Flashback Friday {About}

I don’t know about any of you but even though I am a firm believer in always looking forward in life, sometimes it’s cool to reminisce and think about the past. In this case I’m talking about my blogging past. I love to go back to the beginning and re-reading some of my earlier posts to see where my mind was at that period of time. That’s where the idea for Flashback Friday came from.

So, from now on, every Friday I’ll look back to some moment in time, being it an year, two years or six months, share a post from that week and comment on it, talking about if I still have the same opinion or laugh about how stupid I sounded.

You guys are more than welcome to join in… I’ll add Mr. linky at the bottom so you can share your post and feel free to use the image above. The only thing I ask is that you you mention and link back to me on your Flashback Friday post.

You can go back a week, a month, 9 months or an year, it doesn’t matter, just have fun!

Feature: Emma and the Vampires

Emma and the Vampires by Jane Austen and Wayne Josephson

What better place than pale England to hide a secret society of gentlemen vampires?

In this hilarious retelling of Jane Austen's Emma, screenwriter Wayne Josephson casts Mr. Knightley as one of the most handsome and noble of the gentlemen village vampires. Blithely unaware of their presence, Emma, who imagines she has a special gift for matchmaking, attempts to arrange the affairs of her social circle with delightfully disastrous results. But when her dear friend Harriet Smith declares her love for Mr. Knightley, Emma realizes she's the one who wants to stay up all night with him. Fortunately, Mr. Knightley has been hiding a secret deep within his unbeating heart-his (literal) undying love for her... A brilliant mash-up of Jane Austen and the undead.

Emma and the Vampires was published on August 1 by Sourcebooks. Keep your eyes open for my review, and check out Amazon and Goodreads for some other bloggers’ reviews.

Right now I’m reading Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins.

P.S. I took this from the first chapter (page 13) because I want this to be as spoiler free as possible. Also I just love this cat.

I spin on my heel at the sound of a hiss. In the kitchen doorway, back arched, ears flattened, stands the ugliets tomcat in the world. "Buttercup," I say. Thousands of poeple are dead, but he has survived and even looks well fed.

So if you're a fan or the Hunger Games, have you gotten your hands on Mockingjay yet? I just started to read my copy.

In My Mailbox (15)

I was out at the horse racetrack all day, so I'm sorry this is so late. I actually almost didn't post an IMM this week because I only got one book.

I've been meaning to read this for awhile, so I'm glad I pick it up from the library this week.

I also have a question for everyone. What do you think of the Sony E-readers? I've been thinking about getting one (for Christmas) and I would ask for the Kindle but you can't borrow e-books from my library with that one. I heard the Nook is really slow and Sony has a touch so I think that's going to be the one I ask for. What do you think?

I also want to be able to use Net Galley on it, can you do that with the Sony or Nook?  If you have an e-reader please tell me what you think!

*wow I just realized how much I rambled and how badly I wrote those paragraphs. I would fix it but I'm way to tired and I have band in them morning.
